Program description

The Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences (BSc MLS) program prepares students to enter an array of medical laboratory career positions. Both theoretical and practical learning experiences are used to teach scientific subjects and methodologies. Learning environments include classrooms, laboratories and field trips. Assignments, examinations and practicals are used for evaluation.
Students learn procedural skills to identify biological and chemical structures, and to minimize diagnostic errors. They learn lab safety to prevent contamination and loss of materials. A basic understanding of human bodily systems is also taught, providing context and purpose to laboratory work.
Social and environmental aspects of the program heighten student awareness around potential community hazards. Courses also cover policies and regulations affecting human health.
Mentoring and professional development, as a core component of the program, teaches competency in communication, presentation, computer usage and other transferable skills which are essential to career success.
