Program description

The Bachelor of Science in Operation Theatre Technology (BSc OTT) program prepares students to work in hospital operation theatres (OTs) and intensive care units (ICUs). Learning combines both theory-based and practical courses. Topics include scientific subjects and methodologies, as well as job-specific skills. Learning environments include classrooms, laboratories, hospitals and field trips. Assignments, examinations and practicals are used for evaluation.
Human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, applied physics, pharmacology, hematology, pathology and other related subjects give students a well-rounded understanding of the fundamental sciences at play in an operating theatre.
Practical lessons in surgical procedures, patient safety, disaster management, blood transfusion, sterilization and biomedical waste management prepare students for real-life circumstances on the job.
Students are taught to identify, use and manage operating theatre equipment and devices. Courses also cover essential medical terminology for reading lab reports, keeping medical records and assisting surgeons during medical operations.
The program emphasizes professional responsibility regarding medical ethics and laws, including for patient privacy, consent and safety.
Mentoring and professional development courses teach competency in social interaction, current affairs, drug aversion, traffic safety and other life skills for holistic health and success.
