Program description

Surgical team placing ventilator on patient in operating theatre at Guru Nanak Mission Hospital Dhahan Kaleran near Banga in Punjab

The Master of Science (MSc) in Medical Technology – Anaesthesia & Operation Theatre advances the knowledge of those with an existing Bachelor of Science. Upon completion, Master’s graduates can apply for upper-level allied health positions in operation theatres, or pursue academic and research opportunities in colleges and universities.

Going beyond operation theatre basics, students in the program learn how to administer, monitor and analyze patients under anaesthesia while assisting an anaesthesiologist. For example, they learn to monitor the central nervous system, neuromuscular blocks, breathing airways and blood loss. They learn anaesthesia applications such as medical gas, oxygen therapy and the use of pharmacological drugs. They learn how to avoid and address complications during surgeries.

Multiple types of surgeries using general, laparoscopic, laser, robotic and other tools are explored. An understanding of surgical equipment is covered, to be able to assist surgeons and care for patients during and after surgical procedures.

Students learn hands-on emergency medical skills such as Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). They also learn about suturing, incisions, intravenous (IV) therapy, medical inserts and more.

A scientific basis is provided for working in surgical rooms, with subjects to cover human bodily systems. Coursework covers the cardiovascular system, respiratory system and nervous system.

Students are provided with workplace readiness by acquiring knowledge on sterilization, roles and responsibilities of surgical teams, pre and post-operative procedures, hospital administration and more.

Students are examined on theory and practical work, complete assignments and participate in labs.

The last semester includes an internship and thesis paper, which students write and present before a panel of instructors.
